I was just in my local City Market Store. I picked up their "natural" and generic fish oil supplement. It had 120 mg of DHA. So to get the recommended amount of DHA (recommended by scientific studies) some poor soul would have to take at least 8 per day. There were 60 gel caps per bottle...each bottle therefore contained a 7 and a half day supply. The cost $5.38 per bottle. So to get what you need, you would actually need to buy 4 bottles per month and take 8 pills per day...fish burps and all. This product by the way was not guaranteed for potency and purity. Right above the fish oil tablets was "tahitian noni juice" and "goji juice". I would hate to be a representative of those products in my independent business having to explain why our Noni is better than the grocery store's Noni. Yikes. By the way I did not see any USANA products on the shelves!

More About Fish Oil
If you are not taking fish oil...shame on you! Archives of Internal Medicine, 2005; 165:725-730.
Paper conclusion: Statins and n-3 fatty acids(bio-omega) are the most favorable lipid-lowering interventions with reduced risks of overall cardiac mortality.
In this review statins and omega-3s were equally efficacious for reducing the risk of cardiac mortality.

Crazy for Fish Oil and a Major Correction
In an earlier post I said that either Bio-Omega or Optomega would do as an omega-3 supplement. That is technically true as BOTH are sources of critical omega-3 fatty acids. However the pediatric and cardiology studies for brain development focus specifically on DHA and EPA two specific omega-3s found in Fish Oil. Optomega is not a vegetarian source for these essential fatty acids.
I have spent the last 3 weeks looking at the medical literature and commonly available medical sources. One of the internet sources cites Flax Seed Oil as an excellent source of omega-3s. While it is an excellent source of Omega-3s it is not a source of DHA or EPA.
Our Bio-omega and Optomega are complimentary not competative products. It is both not one or the other. If you are looking for overall heart health and you have an excellent intake of fruits, nuts and vegetables, Bio-omega is a great product for you. All of the cardiology studies are done in patients taking supplements. It is tough to get that 1-3 grams of DHA standardized by diet alone. If you want to "hedge your bets" and make sure, take both.
Wikipedia offers a great section on Omega-3 fatty acids on their vegetarian nutrition page.
Omega-3s and Brain Development and Weight Loss
Many thanks to Susan responding to our February 3rd post regarding Omega-3s and Brain Development. Here is the link to that video, it is awesome! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eIgNpsbvcVM
OMG Another video about Fish Oil. This is a must see. Now here is the key. Studies looking at the health effects of Fish Oil patients were taking 1 to 3 grams of DHA per day. So you will have to look at the Nutrition profile on the side of your USANA Bio-omega to figure out how much to take. I take 4 tablets per day.
